Ananda kumarage first perfomed in the stage when he was a student. He played in two dramas "Nayek Awa" and "Puduma Dosthara" . His first one man drama was "Maranayata koranel Wibagayak" he played all the charactres of that drama.

He became Suranga Mama and did his first performance at Weheragampita Olcott College in 1975. The venerable Hemaloka Nayaka Thero of Deniyaya invited him to do this performance after seeing his talents as a actor. he was awarded a certificate and also presents for this perfomance. In the Next school session he traveled through out Galle and Matara performing in schools. Some of his famouse dramas were "Thoppi Welenda, Kalagola, Gamarala Divyaloke giya heti, Magic Pettiya".

In 1977 he came to Colombo and studied drama in Lionel Went Drama School under Mr Damma Jagoda.

In 1980 He married Vijitha Manel and went to live in the beautiful country side of Matara district. He was working for Sri Lanka Broadcasting Cooperation as a children program producer. With the guidance of Mr Hemajith Fernando in 1981 he joined the first children program of Sri Lanka Rupavahini Cooperation "Lama Thruway" by performing action plays and action songs. In 1986 he was the main children program producer of National TVs Educational Service. He played a main character in the famouse TV series "Sindui Bindui" . In 1992 when the independent television network started children programs he joined the "Suwada Pathma" program as a story teller. He performed 117 stories of his own in this Tv series.

He gave voice to many cartoon characters and characters of children programs made in other languages, like " Ha Ha Hari Hawa" - Bugs Bunny , Manuthapaya, Punchi Ath Petawa, Malgudi Dawas. The Sri Lanka Broadcasting cooperation and Rajarata Sewaya broadcast ed two programs in the name of "Suranga Mama" for two years.

Suranga mama gave the opportunity to lot of children to participate in these programs and opened the doorway to their future.

In 1996 he stepped forward as a writer. Up to now he has published 10 children's story books. The drawings of some of these books are done by children themselves.

He has also written many songs too. Some of the songs have been produced as Video and Audio CD.
